Het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen (KBIN) in Brussel beschikt over een mineralogische verzameling met duizenden specimens die afkomstig zijn van over de hele wereld. Enkele brokjes zijn echter niet afkomstig van onze planeet. Zo bezit het KBIN vier brokjes maanstof en één staal basalt die afkomstig zijn van de maan. Deze specimens werden naar de Aarde gebracht tijdens de Apollo 11 en 17 ruimtemissies en werden samen met de nationale vaandels die meereisden naar de maan aan het Belgische volk geschonken door de Amerikaanse president Nixon. Tijdens de Apollo 11 en 17 missies brachten de astronauten 133 kilogram aan maanstalen mee naar de Aarde. De leeftijd van deze stalen wordt geschat op 3,1 tot 4,5 miljard jaar. Koning Boudewijn vertrouwde uiteindelijk de specimens toe aan het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen waar men de brokjes kan bezichtigen.
